Organizing and Creating your Family History Video Slideshow

Creating and preserving your memories

A Family History Video Slideshow is a wonderful way to keep those special memories alive.

It is a major project and can be time consuming and overwhelming. But when you take a systematic approach to gathering the information, photos or even videos to include in your slideshow, it can become an exciting project.

Remember, you are creating a story not just displaying your photos. You need to give your slideshow some life and I will show you how to do this.

Gathering Information

Think of how far back you would like to start your family history from. Begin with gathering all your information to tell your story.

Photo Collage

Below is a list that will help you organise information for this project.

  1. Name of person;
  2. Date of birth;
  3. Place of birth;
  4. Scanned Birth Certificates or any important documents etc… ;
  5. Description about this person;
  6. Highlight achievement;
  7. Tell about Milestone events or celebrations.

Talk about their achievements and milestone events and how it has had an impact on your family.

Text and Voice Recordings

You can add text or record your memoirs to tell your story as well as have music playing in the background as you tell your story.

Music mixed with photos gives your slideshow an emotional feel and is a touching way to give honour to the person as well as celebrate their life and journey. Choosing the right music is so important because it will set the mood of your slideshow. Please choose it carefully.

Family Photo CollageYou can choose music that will either reflect the era or your favourite song in that year. The music should flow and synchronize with your photos and videos, at a pace that allows your audience to view each image/video and take it in.

Once you have all the information, you can start gathering and choosing your photos and videos to match your information and events.

Arrange your photos chronologically or according to your information to tell your story. Use similar photos to create a series of photo montages and collages.

Length of Slideshow

For your family history, you can include as many photos or videos to create your slideshow. You would need to sort them into chapters. A 3 to 5 minute song can take up to 30 to 40 photos and a couple of short videos. Therefore, each slideshow you create, try to name it as a chapter.

Transitions and Special Effects

You can choose to have your photos static with no movements at all.

or …

You can use transitions and effects to indicate to your audience when a chapter of a story begins or ends.

or…

Emphasize and highlight a special event that impacts the person’s life or family.

Special effects can create an emotional experience and excitement for your audience that will bring joy or celebrate the triumph of a legend.

You can create anything that you feel will inspire future generations to respect their past and look to the future to create a legacy.

But most importantly, enjoy the process of your creation.

These guidelines will help you to start gathering information, photos and videos to create your Family History Slideshow.
